Sinopse: O enredo de Dragon Ball Z é situado 5 anos após o final da série anterior, com Goku adulto e pai de seu filho Gohan. Ele conhece seu irmão mais velho, Raditz, que lhe informa que ambos são membros de uma raça extraterrestre, os Sayajins (Saiya-jin). Tal raça enviou Goku ainda criança para a Terra com o objetivo de conquistar o planeta. Mas, ele fere sua cabeça logo após a aterragem e esquece sua missão inicial. Goku se nega a ajudar Raditz a continuar a missão e começa a confrontar outros inimigos do espaço, como o príncipe dos Saiyajins, Vegeta, que se torna seu rival e posteriormente seu aliado. Ele também enfrenta Freeza, um tirano galático responsável pela destruição da raça Saiyajin, cujas ações levam Goku a se transformar em Super Saiyajin.
